On today's episode of The Health Literacy 2.0 Podcast, Seth Serxner is joined by Dr. Dee Kinney (Assistant Professor at Miami University) to talk about the importance of finding reliable health information and teaching it to college students.
Dr. Kinney began her career as a registered dietitian, specializing in weight management and disordered eating. She was concerned about the misunderstanding surrounding nutrition and the narrow focus of her clients. She went on to earn a Master's degree in social work to understand the behavioral aspect of change and diet.
Later, Dr. Dee Kinney earned her PhD in health promotion to bring together the behavioral science of social work and the science of nutrition. She now teaches fundamental nutrition, personal health, and child health and wellness at Miami University.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Seth and Dee discuss about:
☑️ Helping students differentiate between trends, myths, and credible information.
☑️ Understanding the limits of current knowledge.
☑️ Teaching students how to identify scientifically sound, trustworthy resources for the rest of their lives.
☑️ Incorporating health literacy into the curriculum due to student use of unreliable sources of health and nutrition information.
☑️ Curiosity and critical thinking as tools to evaluate nutrition and health information.
☑️ How EdLogics' gamified program educates students in fun & engaging ways.
