HOSTED BY

Dr. Seth Serxner, PhD, MPH

EdLogics Chief Health Officer

In this episode of The Health Literacy 2.0 Podcast, Seth Serxner is joined by Krystal Sexton, Health Analytics Manager at Shell, to talk about how to measure the impact of health initiatives on various metrics such as safety, productivity, and retention. This evidence-based approach gave Krystal and her team the the credibility and support needed to drive positive change within the organization.

Krystal Sexton is an epidemiologist and biostatistician with 11 years of experience at Shell. Krystal holds a PhD in cancer epidemiology and previously worked in breast cancer research. While initially focused on traditional occupational health, Krystal's perspective on health expanded to include mental, emotional, social, and financial well-being. Over the past 7 or 8 years, she played a key role in building a business case for restructuring and establishing a dedicated team focused on holistic health at Shell.

Krystal provides valuable perspectives on the data required to make a business case for investing in a holistic approach to employee wellness. She emphasizes the significance of measures such as employee engagement and safety incidents in driving positive outcomes. Through her expertise in analytics, she demonstrates how a 10-point increase in employee engagement can lead to a remarkable 40% decrease in safety incidents, showcasing the powerful connection between employee well-being and business success.

Furthermore, Krystal highlights the importance of leadership support in implementing such initiatives. She shares how the ability to translate the positive results into tangible savings and potential gains made an undeniable impact on the support received from the C-suite. It is inspiring to hear how Shell's leadership embraced the holistic health approach once the strong business case was presented.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Seth and Krystal discuss:

☑️ The importance of a holistic approach to health, prioritizing mental, emotional, social, and financial well-being.

☑️ How an increase in employee engagement leads to a decrease in safety incidents.

☑️ How productivity, budget, retention, and attrition are tied to holistic health initiatives.

☑️ The need for a robust mental health program aimed at addressing the specific needs of teams within Shell, while emphasizing the importance of social connection to combat social isolation.

☑️ And much more.

Thanks, Krystal!
